The two meet when Iris is mugged on a bus. Jane Fonda plays Iris King, a bakery worker widowed less than a year who is battling to keep her family fed, her creditors at arm's length and her emotions in check. The movie stars Robert DeNiro as Stanley Cox, a man with an invisible handicap. But it is obviously just what director Martin Ritt had in mind for Laurel, a small, fictional industrial New England town where economic woes are masked by white picket fences and concerts in the park. The film Stanley & Iris takes place in Waterbury, not the most scenic part of Connecticut. Not surprisingly, a second Mystic Pizza movie, a sequel to the first, is already in the works and producer Samuel Goldwyn Jr. ![]() But I couldn't help wondering if beneath her pleasant smile and calm demeanor there might be some deep emotional rift or wrenching romantic trauma ready to unfold: the stuff of greasepaint and Hollywood. They learn some important lessons about life, love and the pursuit of the "perfect pizza." Set against this nautical backdrop, Mystic Pizza is a romantic comedy about the coming of age of three young women who work in the town pizzeria.
